working principle:
Powered anodes rely on current fed into the anode to apply current, rather than on natural electrolysis. The anodes can protect other metals (steel water heater tanks) for many years if the powered anodes are made of the correct material and kept energized. It is even more durable than standard anode rods. The powered anode doesn't react with water at all, but keeps out any stinky water. Additionally, standard magnesium anode rods can react with water under certain water conditions. This will give the water an unpleasant smell/taste of rotten eggs. A power bar will stop this reaction.
Installation Notes:
To accommodate this powered anode requires a 3/4" brass tee and a 3/4" plastic lined fitting long enough to extend beyond the thickness of the insulation.
Most gas heaters require 3" or 6" long fittings.
Longer splices and brass couplers may be required to remove insulation and complete installation.
Plumber's tape, metal antioxidants, and a screwdriver or utility knife are required to remove insulation.
