Metal oxide varistor (MOV), as a non-linear resistance element, is mainly made of zinc oxide (ZnO), which has high surge capability and large nonlinear coefficient. Below the threshold voltage, it has a high resistance and almost no current flows, but above the threshold voltage, the resistance drops sharply and a huge amount of current can be released. Due to this characteristic, varistors can absorb abnormal overvoltages and lightning surges as protective components in electrical and electronic equipment.
