A unique system called the Oxygen Detection Safety Pilot or ODS

 

In the early 1980s, all US manufacturers adopted Oxygen Detection Safety Pilot (ODS) technology for all emission-free gas products.

 

ODS technology originated in Europe and has been used in Europe for over half a century with an excellent safety record. According to accident/incident data compiled by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) since 1980, no deaths have been recorded from emissions associated with the use of non-vented gas heating appliances equipped with ODS. Industry engineers say the ODS pilot is for gas, what a circuit breaker is for electricity.

 

How ODS works

 

The ODS system consists of three main parts:

 

Precisely designed oxygen sensitive pilot with adjustable flame characteristics;
a thermocouple located in the pilot flame hood; and

A safety shut-off valve.


The pilot is designed to be stable in a very narrow operating range. The thermocouple responds to changes in the characteristics of the pilot flame and generates millivolts upon heating to hold the gas supply valve in the open position. If the ODS system detects low levels of oxygen, the flame will go out. The loss of flame causes the thermocouple to cool. This cooling reduces the millivolt voltage, which returns the gas valve to its normally closed position, shutting off the fuel supply to the device. This will put out the flame and the pilot. The unit will not operate until the living space is properly ventilated and enough oxygen is introduced to reignite the pilot.

 

Tamper-proof

 

Each ODS system includes a precision bore. Any attempt to drill it out to expand the pilot flame will disintegrate the orifice. Also, it is not interchangeable with a normal standing pilot. Additionally, propane and natural gas emission-free products cannot be converted from one gas to another.

 

Numerous safety features ensure reliable operation

 

In addition to the ODS valve, each unvented heating unit is equipped with:

 

An automatic shut-off valve that stops the flow of air if the pilot burner goes out or if the air flow is interrupted in any way;
Precision engineered burners produce the cleanest, most complete combustion of gas without liftoff or flashback at low input rates, low pressure or airflow;
An internal, non-adjustable pressure regulator to prevent excessive combustion in the event of an increase in gas pressure;
Ignition device, usually a piezoelectric igniter, without matches;
Define cabinet temperature limits for wall-mounted or floor-mounted heaters;
defined distances from combustible surfaces for all categories of gas appliances;
Safety grill for heater, fire screen and range hood for gas log.
