Vietnamese cashew nuts

Cashew nuts were introduced to Vietnam in the 19th century. It was originally grown in home gardens as a shade tree. Cashew nuts were recognized as a commercial crop about 10 years ago. Soil and climate conditions in Quang Nam-Da Nang province and further south are considered suitable for cashew nut production. In 1980, the area under cashew cultivation was only 30,000 hectares. By 1996 it had grown to 250,000 hectares. In 1996, the total cashew nut production was 122,070 tons, and the export value of cashew nuts was 122.07 billion US dollars. At present, many southern provinces such as Dong Nai, Song Be, Tay Ninh and Thuan have large cashew plantations in production.
