Friction stir welding (FSW) is a solid-state joining process widely used for soft materials such as aluminum alloys because it avoids many of the laudable problems of fusion welding. However, the commercial viability of the FSW process for harder alloys such as steel and titanium alloys awaits the development of cost-effective and durable tools that can consistently achieve structurally sound welds. Due to its high strength and hardness at high temperatures and high temperature stability, PCBN is the tool material of choice for hard material welding FSW. In addition, PCBN's low coefficient of friction results in a smooth soldering surface.
